Scopes of Work - What exactly is a Scope of Work? A Scope of Work is a contract between you and your sub-contractors detailing the actual work and materials to be installed. It is different than the actual contract which spells out the legal side of business, it spells out the type and quality of workmanship for the job.
The Scopes of Work manual is a comprehensive set of legally detailed contracts. This manual will be used in two ways. First, it will be a guide to learning the different material that might be used on a job and how they are to be installed.
Second, it will be a guide for your sub-contractors. They will use it to follow the installation instructions the way they are outlined, and more importantly the way you want them to be. If a sub-contractor does not install something the way it is specifically outlined in writing, you will be in a better position to take appropriate action against them for not following guidelines correctly.
You will need to be very disciplined and make sure that all sub-contractors used adhere to the Scopes of Work. I recommend that you put this in their contract.
Keep in mind, business is business, and you may need to be structured the best way possible. In my opinion, this should keep your sub-contractors in line at all times. They won't be so likely to take short-cuts and will think before charging you any extra's. The Scope of Work will range from 4-8 pages depending on which type of sub-contractor you are using. Additionally, you will receive the entire book on CD-ROM which will allow you to make any necessary changes.
